How does colon cancer start?

Cancer in the colon often begins as a polyp. A polyp grows in the lining of your large intestine or colon and starts as a small clump of cells. Many polyps remain benign and are only removed if found during a colonoscopy as a precaution. As polyps grow in size, it's more likely they become cancerous and should be removed. Colonoscopies at our New York, NY, practice are so important because colon cancer can be present in the body for many years before a patient actually experiences symptoms.

What are the first warning signs?

If you have a history of colon cancer in your family, you're probably wondering about getting a colonoscopy. Even if you are not at an increased risk for colon cancer, you should still have a colonoscopy by the age of 50. Different screening tests are used to confirm colon cancer, but early warning signs of an issue in the colon could be:

  • Excessive gas
  • Stomach pain
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea or constipation that doesn't go away
  • Black or bloody stool
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Feeling like your bowels are still full after you go

Experiencing any of these symptoms could mean there is an issue in your colon. We specialize in colonoscopies and other screening tests to help prevent colon cancer.
