What Is an Endoscopy?

If you’re experiencing pain or other issues in the upper GI tract, Dr. Daniel Alpert in New York, NY might recommend an endoscopy to determine the cause. Learn more about this procedure in the guide below.

What Is An Endoscopy and Why Would I Need One?

An endoscopy is a procedure used to detect and treat issues in the upper GI tract. During the procedure, a long tube – an endoscope – is inserted into the mouth and guided through the throat, esophagus, and beyond. The endoscope has a small camera and a light attached to it that allows the doctor to get a good view of the GI tract to accurately diagnose the cause of any symptoms you are facing.

In some cases, other tools are attached to the endoscope, such as scissors. These scissors can be used to take biopsies during the same procedure. Additional tools can also be used to dilate constricted areas, remove swallowed objects, remove polyps, stop bleeding, place feeding tubes, and more.

Generally, the entire procedure takes 30 minutes or less. However, in some cases – such as those mentioned above – it might take a little longer. You will be sedated during the procedure, so you’ll need a ride home once it’s completed.

Who Needs An Endoscopy?

Sometimes, digestive issues can be diagnosed without an endoscopy, but there are many times when Dr. Alpert might suggest you have one in New York, NY. This typically includes if you have symptoms such as:

  • Stomach pain
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Unexplained bleeding
  • Constipation
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Chronic heartburn
  • Unexplained weight loss

The endoscopy will help to determine the root cause of these symptoms, which might include any of the following and more.

  • GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Cancer
  • Celiac disease
  • Inflammation
  • Ulcers
  • Blockages
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Large veins in the esophagus
  • Hernias
  • Infections

An endoscopy is just one of the beginning steps in addressing your specific digestive issues. Once a diagnosis has been made, Dr. Alpert will work with you to develop a treatment plan that can help you achieve optimal results. This can include anything from medication and lifestyle changes to additional procedures, such as surgery, when necessary.
