COLON CANCER RISK FACTORS

  • Age greater than or equal to 50
  • Previous personal history of colon polyps and/or colon cancer
  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • Family History of colon polyps/cancer
  • Personal History of Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's colitis
  • History of other malignancies, especially breast, ovarian or uterine
  • Warning signs including rectal bleeding, change in bowel habits, weight loss

  • The most common complaint among patients diagnosed with colon cancer is....nothing!! Most patients are completely asymptomatic
  • 20% of all patients will have colon polyps
  • Virtually all colon cancers arise from previously benign polyps
  • Excellent lifestyle is not a guarantee of colon cancer prevention
  • The only age group that has an increasing incidence of colon cancer in the United States is people between the ages of 40 and 49, and age group that is not routinely screened
  • Colonoscopies save lives. Please get screened
  • Colonoscopies are safe, painless procedures which effectively reduce colon cancer rates by identifying and removing benign polyps before they become cancerous
